Back bacon: 1972 BMW R75/5

Bimmer:  A BMW automobile.  Beemer:  A BMW motorcycle.  Bummer:  What you get when buying OEM parts for the above, not that you will do very much with this fine example of Germanic craftsmanship.  Find this 1972 BMW R75/5 for sale in Victoria, BC for $4,750 via craigslist.

The BMW "slash 5" or "toaster" series was introduced by Bayerische Motoren Werke Motorrad in 1970 as a modern replacement for the R-series.  In 1972, BMW introduced the toaster-shaped gas tank on the slash 5's.  The /5 was available in 500, 600 and 750cc capacities.  Our subject bike is a R75/5 with a horizontally opposed 750cc twin, producing 55hp and topping out at 10 mph over the ton.  It also comes with a reasonable amount of grime, so you wouldn't feel bad riding it instead of hiding it.

It's cool how BMW incorporated the tach and the speedo in one dial integrated into the headlight vs. the traditional two separate instruments.  This bike has about 27,000 km or about 17,000 miles.  The ad says it has had lots of recent work - but you must be keen to inquire (or enquire - maybe that is Canadian).

    My father has always ridden BMW motorcycles. Right now he has a r100 and a 1965 r65 with crazy earles forks.
    I always enjoy visiting and taking them out for a spin. The torque twist is something to get use to but the sound and feel is always great.
    I have noticed many airhead bikes bing turned into custom works of art by builders. They look great as early minimalism cafe-bobbers

    My beloved 1970 R60/5 has been with me for about 15 years. These bikes are addictive. Certain aspects are a bit of relearning, but the gentle lope and longevity are outstanding.

    If this bike is an excellent runner, the bit of funky black painted chrome is acceptable as is the price.

    Couldn't agree with you guys more. My next bike project may just be an airhead boxer BMW. Never ridden one but I'm sure I'd like it.

    I captured this pair of "minimalist cafe-bobbers" in the wild...ok, no, it wasn't the wild, it was the Luftgekhult Porsche show at the Modernica furniture factory here in LA. They were parked outside the show gates. Wrong brand obviously but they fit the show theme well.
