Mid Week Match-Up: A Runner, Ready For The Hacksaw

It is Wednesday so that means it's time for another edition of Daily Turismo's weekly game of spin the bottle jack, also known as Mid Week Match-Up!  Last week's match-up was a super car for the newly appointed CEO.  Now that the guy's been on the job for a while (and done the super car thing), he wants to get a toy to tinker with on the weekend.  Something inexpensive enough, not to raise his wife's eyebrows, but devious enough to know that he has plans to build it into something quite different.  Arbitrary budget cap of $7k and car must be running/driving to avoid too much CFO scrutiny. 


DT's cub reporter Hunsbloger found this 1975 Fiat 124 Sport Spider for $3500. The seller says it runs great, pre-smog and is still stock except for wheels/tires. Just tool around in it on the weekends until you can find the S2000 engine for it.  With some time, effort, money, sweat, blood and tears -- maybe you could have something half as cool as the MGB GT-Sport.

    VW Type 3 Fastback. Good as-is, better with some work, simply irrational with a Subaru boxer engine.

      Amusing how everything these days is, "matching numbers". Imagine that, a 1990 Mustang with matching numbers. A rare find indeed.

    You know, because it gets good gas mileage, is cheap to insure, etc. He will drive it around in good weather while quietly monitoring craigslist for the first totalled 2015 Mustang with a 2.3L Ecoboost with a stick to appear. He will procure the mill and trans and smuggle it into his garage with a Harbor Freight cherry picker. After the transplant is completed, he will be featured in a couple of Ford/Mustang magazines and live happily ever after.
