The Kingswood sedan, as shown here, is a popular base for drag and burnout cars, as well as main street cruisers and surf wagons. Along with the meat pie and AFL, it's a cultural icon. The VX generation of the Holden Commodore was built in Australia for local consumption from 2000 through 2002 along with its sister car, the Holden Ute that was designated VU. The V platform was a full sized affair built with a front-engine rear-drive setup with Ecotec V6 and Gen III small block V8 power heading to the rear wheels. The conversion to unleaded was mandated in Australia for the 1986 model year. Poor sales of the Commodore had left Holden cash-strapped. In a desperate attempt to update to modernise, they turned to Nissan, who licensed the straight six RB30E engine, used in the Patrol and the Australian-built R31 Skyline for the VL (1986-88) Commodore. The Commodore was the only application of the turbocharged version of this engine, and the Calais Turbo is the most sought after of all VLs, being the top specification of Commodore at the time. By Michael B. The Holden Calibra was a handsome German coupe that was much more fashionable than most other GM products, which is a shame, because no one bought them Down Under. Essentially a coupe version of the staid Vectra/Cavalier sedan in Europe, it utilised the same platform, engines, and gearboxes. Plans to export the car to the States as a Saab never materialised, but it would have been interesting to see Americans’ response to such a svelte GM product. While over in Oz scouting cars at Performance Car Mania at Winton in 2014, I heard both sides of a drunk argument of which is "the best burnout car from the factory, ever". The contenders were the VN SS, the Tickford EL XR8, and the VS Maloo. Though the VN SS won this particular Carlton Draught-fueled debate, the VS HSV Maloo was capable of epic feats of boganism with a simple touch of the throttle. The Holden Commodore is a full sized sedan built by GM's Australian subsidiary that was (for a precious few years) imported into the USA as the Pontiac G8, and currently as the Chevrolet SS. The Commodore has always been a rear-wheel-drive monster, but the VE generation (2007-2013) brought new lunacy in the form of an all independent suspension setup and GM's GenIV small block up front -- plus it was available as a Ute. The Pontiac G8 was a rebadged Holden Commodore imported to the US market from Australia for only two years, 2008 and 2009. There was a base V6, a V8 powered GT model, but the good stuff was saved for the GXP, a MY2009 only LS3 powered brute available with a 6-speed manual or auto gearbox. Pontiac only imported 1,800 of the GXP sedans, and they have maintained most of their original cost, but today's is the cheapest we've seen.
