The world of GT-40 replicars runs the gambit from atrocity to travesty, but in this next car we might have found a bit of a gem. The FT Bonito was sold as a kit by Fiberfab and sold mostly in Germany and the Netherlands according to various furrin language websites. The FT used a VW Beetle chassis and a polyester body styled to look 2 parts GT-40 and one part Opel Manta. Title: GT-40 Replica
Build in 1979 in the Netherlands and successfully imported into the US in 1980. This is the only GT-40 replica in the US approved for the road. No smog required. Engine is Ford V6 2 liter, transmission is Porsche 911, 5 speed. Chassis: VW with sub frame to support heavy Ford engine and full length chassis support beams for added stiffness. Shocks: Monroe Load Adjusters. Audio: Blaupunkt Stereo AM, FM, Tape. Engine is completely topped off with oil for preservation.
Wheels are ATS, magnesium with steel cores, 15". Interior upholstery is hand sewn. Body entirely hand laid fiberglass with carbon fiber cords around wheel wells, windows and door jams. The build of this car started in June 1977 and was completed in June of 1979. It was tested by the Dutch government to the same level as factory cars with the exception of crash testing of course. Passed with flying colors. Was imported into the US in California in 1980, passed EPA and all US safety standards after some minor modification.

It doesn't resemble the GT40 all that closely - especially not from behind - but it's not bad looking in its own right. I wonder if it will accept other Cologne family V6s like the Explorer 4.0?
