Would you guys be interest in publishing reviews of my old crap cars? I've got all sorts of cool things like a '90 Ford F350 ramp truck that has needed almost entirely a new everything electrical this winter, and a rusty '73 BMW 2002 that needs a new everything made of rubber. Also an '85 BMW 528e that I've modded to the point where I'd probably have 30 extra horsepower if the #1 cylinder piston ring weren't crap. Then there's the hasn't-run-in-4-years Porsche 951 that I traded an engineless Bavaria for.

DeleteSo my ulterior motive before Anony Moose killed the discussion was that my teenager who has been using my tools has lost 10 metric sockets and 2 combo wrenches. These were mid-80's US made Craftsman. So what post Millennium made in USA tools would you replace them with? Yes, Snap-On would be nice, but he's paying...
DeleteHarbor Freight so when they break or strip you can exchange them for free and keep getting new ones.
DeleteCraftsman, Stanley, proto, Mac, Strapon, they all break when the 300 pound gorilla gets careless. The good ones get replaced promptly with something of solid quality. If I were a Profesional mechanic paid by book hours, I'd buy a lot of things off a truck to save time.
ReplyDeleteFor me every car I own and every trip I make should be an event unto itself. Getting into the vehicle should be the final destination every bit as much as where I'm going. I've experienced this with pedestrian cars every bit as much as expensive ones. The ~experience~ is the key.
ReplyDeleteFor example for a sports car I want every driver input to have a visceral feel. From the texture of the shift knob, through the bushings into the linkage, to the transmission internals, through the transmission mounts into the chassis, paired in harmony with the engagement characteristics of the clutch, the throttle response and weight of the flywheel and so on to encapsulate and hone the driver experiences.
But event I'm looking for is entirely different in say, a long distance freeway cruiser/ GT car. I want to be totally isolated from the noise and bumps outside of the vehicle.
Cars are cheap, you can take this practice to ridiculous extremes, limited mostly by parking availability.
What vehicles have you delegated to the experiences you seek or are repeatedly drawn to? How have you brought what is mundane and intentionally transparent into a conscious event in your own vehicles?

I have an unnatural attraction to '01-'04 E46 5 speed wagons. I need one badly. I'm not sure why this is. I am still driving my '95 E36 4 banger convertible that I bought new..... with 303,000 miles. Help me!
ReplyDeleteHow often do you drive with the top down? I've never had a convertible. I have had a car with no roof at all, and almost everything I own has a sun roof, which is always closed or used as a vent. It's rare that I open a sun roof. In my daily,the only car I own with a glass roof, I always drive with the shade closed. Had I optioned it, I'd have skipped the sunroof entirely.
DeleteThey're nice to open up on those 2 or 3 perfect days each year, but those don't come around too often.

Deletethe Saab 99 i drove in college (mid-80s) had a leaky sunroof - whenever the rain started i would run outside with a big garbage bag and drape it over the roof, trap it best i could in the doors - to this day, and i jump when there's a sudden rainstorm, even though both cars now have no sunroof whatsoever
the Roadmaster has fixed roof windows with retractable sunshades - an elegant solution for a more civilized age
I DD'd a Triumph Spitfire in the early 'oughts' in the summer in the midwest and would leave the top down from time to time at night. I, too, was finely attuned to the sound of thunder while sleeping and hopped up to dash outside to tarp or pull up the top post-haste a number of times.

- the sample URL is a bit misleading, as most image URLs will end with .jpg, .png or .gif
give it a try, and if it fails leave it up there - i will have a look and point out the error - unless it breaks the site, which is obvious
