5k: Hatch Brat: 1980 Subaru DL Camino

 The Subaru Leone (Italian for Lion) was a compact econobox manufactured by Fuji Heavy Industries from 1971 to 1994 and marketed as the DL in the USA.  Like most Subarus, it was powered by a flat-4 engine and was available in multiple body configurations including the funky-cool El Camino style BRAT (Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter)...but this one started life as a simple DL Hatch.  Find this 1980 Subaru DL Camino offered for $3,500 or reasonable offer, located in Sierra Vista, AZ via NASIOC forums.


The  seller indicates that the previous owner cut off the rear roof section and welding in a rear wall/window from a BRAT, but it leaks a bit. The seller also admits that he bought it for RallyCross (and because it's AWESOME) but found it wasn't as competitive as he'd hoped.  Is this a case of a poor workman blaming his tools or a Holley carb fed EJ22E being a pretty miserable way to get performance out of a Subaru hatch.

      I had a BRAT, that is. Don't know what possessed the owner of the car featured above to do what they did. That's just nasty and not in a good way.

      This post got me to wondering where we're at with the XT. Still completely devalued and unloved, there are a still out there. This is the best one I found with a ten second search.

      I'm off topic, but I don't care because the XT was and still is such an interesting car, often hilariously. It's hard to believe that in 1987, Subaru charged nearly $2,000 more one than a Mustang GT. I just can't figure out why the 'Stang is still around and the XT isn't...it's a real mystery.

      To me the Brat was always a miserable little car. Took a friend's skiing in CO and through WY and never could make it over a hill doing more than 35 mph.
