The BMW 2002 has for years been a great starter car and the European
equivalent of the Ford Mustang or Datsun 510. They were inexpensive, parts are
plentiful/cheap and, most importantly, they are easy to understand,
diagnose and fix when things go wrong. Unfortunately for the average
Joe, the prices of the BMW 2002 have recently appreciated considerably
(especially the Tii version) and finding a cheap one will require some willingness to accept a few flaws. Find this 1974 BMW 2002
currently bidding for $6,300 reserve-not-met with 3 days to go. 
This BMW E10 is not a perfect example, as it does have a few rust bubbles under the skin but the seller does say the paint looks good for its age...whatever that means. Looking good is really a subjective thing when it comes to paint and buying this car without an in person inspection could be result in a surprise when it arrives at your door - good or bad.
The BMW M05 (in the M10 series) 2.0 liter inline 4-cylinder is rated at 100 horsepower and 106 ft-lbs of torque, which may not seem like much, but does the job well given the 2002's low curb weight. The engine is mated to a later 5 speed manual transmission from another BMW, probably an E21 or E30 3-series.
The interior of this 2002 looks nice, it isn't perfect, but it looks decent for a driver. Sporty Recaro bucket seats likely from an E30 have been swapped and the steering wheel looks like a Momo or similar. Additionally, the minilite style wheels look great on this one.

I own two BMW 2002 models and they are really good cars. Not as fast as a new 335i, but I won't need to replace a $5000 high pressure fuel pump every few years and other drivers smile when they see it, instead of giving me the bird. Great little cars and this one is a good deal if it stays below $10,000.

The tire/wheels and heigth to clear them are a little distracting to me.
