Reader Ride: 1982 Porsche 911SC

Time for another edition of DT's questionably named Reader Ride feature which was originally called Reader Rides, and alternatively Reader's Ride or Reader's Rides, but like a hungry bear in a campground -- tense don't matter. Anyway, we've decided to standardize on Reader Ride and this one is a winner -- reader Tamas' 1982 Porsche 911SC.

How long have you owned it?

I have owned it for 7 years. I was 21 when I bought it. This was my first real car, whatever car I had before it doesn't count.

Why did you buy it? 

Well when we were in high school back in Romania, me and my friend used to play NFS porsche 2000. After I moved to the states a friend of mine/former neighbor asked me if I wanna go for a shotgun ride on Mulholland. I did. Derek's car was a 82 SC and it was setup for auto x. Derek being a class winner also added to the fun factor(yes I was screaming). Fast forward I sold my 93 RX7 and my Tahoe the same week and bought my 82 911SC.

What do you use it for (commute, fun, racing...etc)?

I can say I use it for everything. Been on most of the tracks here on the West Coast, I drive it daily when I get the bug, vintage rallies, weekend getaways, canyon rides, and grocery getting.

Is it stock or modified? If modified, please list some modifications. 

It's modified. I guess the most significant modifications are all performance oriented.

I had the motor torn down and rebuilt.

High compression, 3.6L cams, cat bypass, M&K muffler, rsr aluminum flywheel. Transmission reworked with wevo shifter, beefed up suspension 22/28 torsion bars, 21 smart racing through body front sway and turbo rear sway bar. There are more visual and smaller mods like the reversed vipers, backdated heater, amber lights, prototipo wheel, turbo seats, factory style RS rollbar and 5 point harness.

What was the most memorable day in your car (proposed to wife, 3rd child born in back seat...etc)?There are many great memories. I guess the one worth mentioning is the one when I got the car impounded and I almost got arrested. It happened on the last day of Targa California last year. Officer Gomez took my car and left me and my navigator in front of IHOP 100 miles from home at 10pm hungry and tired.

What was the most catastrophic failure of parts/components?

Well I caught my transmission before it grenaded, but I did manage to break a piston on Willow Springs. Hence the engine tear down and mods.

What makes you want to keep owning this car?

I owned and driven many cars. But anytime I get behind the wheel of the SC  its like I'm home. It fits me like a glow. I love the smell of gas, oil and leather in the cabin. I love that mechanical engine sound. I like the fact that its a difficult car to drive, that it challenges me, that it constantly tries to kill me.

Will you ever sell it?

I would rephrase that question to would you ever sell it? And the answer would be no. I think these 911s were made to last a lifetime. After all these years it still can surprise me and that's why I'm still in love with it.
