Toyota introduced its Japanese version of the Fiat X1/9 in 1984 as the MR2, a name shortened from Mid-engined Runabout 2-seater. It was powered by a 4-banger taken from the Corolla and was relished in its day for handling and speed. This MR2 has been recently restored and sports a multistage dupont paint job with color from a Mercedes. It looks nice in the photos, but a thorough inspection of an 'new' paint work is always important when buying a car. A quick respray will easily hide hideous body problems, but they will always reappear within a year or two.
The engine in this Toyota comes from a second generation MR2, it is the 5SFE, a 2.0 liter inline4 cylinder that puts out 135 horsepower and 145 ft-lbs of torque. It should be a considerable upgrade from the stock 1.6 liter engine.
The interior of this MR2 looks minty clean and much nicer than any stock MR2 we've ever seen. The seats have been upholstered in some kind of synthetic leather.
The price on this MR2 is starting to get high for 1st generation MR2s of any condition and we would be tempted to choose an original unmolested example before this one, but it does look nice in the pictures and the upgraded engine could add considerable to the hoon-ability of this little runabout.

ReplyDeleteI think that for people of the generation that this car appeals to, retro mod cars may have more personal value than 100% original cars. To me this car checks all the right boxes that an original car wouldn't.
ReplyDeleteI remember taking one of these (a 88 supercharged one) off a used car lot in college and giving it a nice flogging. I remember thinking how much like a go-kart it was and that I was sweaty afterwords.
