The Jet Set Life: 1987 Citroen CX 25 Prestige

I hate to be the guy who pooh-poohs all the good ideas around here...but buying a 30 year old Citroen is sorta like buying a private jet.  Its not intrinsically a bad idea...its just that the consequences are less than desirable.  Sure, its nice to brag to your friends about your new toy, but maintenance is expensive, constant, and time consuming.  Plus, there is the danger associated with piloting one of these things, maintenance logs, FAA clearance, et cetera...all for something that is gonna spend more time perched on 3 wheels than zooming around taking you to exotic places.  Bottom line, you should only buy this car if it is an emotional impulse buy and you can afford it.  Find this 1987 Citroen CX 25 Prestige offered for $12500 in Palm Beach, FL via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Find this 1986 Citroen CX Prestige offered for $5950 in Sunnyvale, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

10k: Magic: 1986 Citroen CX Presitge

Every great automobile legacy consists of three parts or acts. The first part is called "The Pledge". The automaker shows you something ordinary: a sedan, a coupe or a fastback. He shows you a Citroen (Citroën!) Traction Avant 15 CV. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed real, unaltered, normal. But of course... it probably isn't. The second part is called "The Turn". The OEM takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you're looking for a Citroën DS, a hydropneumatic suspended piece of art. But you wouldn't clap yet. Because making something bizarre isn't enough; you have to do it again. That's why every auto legacy has a third act, the hardest part, the part Citroën calls "the CX Prestige".  Find this 1986 Citroën CX Presitge currently bidding here on eBay for $11,000 with 1 day to go. (Update, the seller has removed this listing, probably because it was not going to meet some hidden reserve or it was sold via a cash offer outside of the bidding process).

10k: Alsace Chainsaw Massacre: 1985 Citroën CX Prestige

The CX was the last Citroën designed by the small company that was once Europe's largest automobile manufacturer many years before it was taken over by Peugeot.  The CX used Citroën's bizarre hydro-pneumatic self leveling suspension system and a transverse mounted inline-4 powering the front wheels.  Citroën sold over 1.2 million of the front drive sedan/wagon/fastbacks between 1974 and 1991 but never officially in the USA.  Find this 1985 Citroën CX Prestige for sale in Orange County, CA for $7900 via craigslist.  Tip from Nicholas B who writes: If they ever decide to remake Texas Chainsaw Massacre with french car parts instead of body parts, I think this shed would have a starring role.
