MGBs are much more reliable than you're making them out to be. Starting with a good one is key (doctordel can confirm). If you do that, upkeep is relatively minimal, easy, and cheap. Start with a basketcase and you'll always be fixing something. Same with most old cars.
ReplyDeleteAt first glance, this one seems to be decent, but the info and photos are pretty limited. No shots of the engine or underside. It looks to actually be in Oklahoma, and if it's been there the whole time, rust is probably minimal to non-existent. The rockers are the first place to look.
The price is in the ballpark, if not a little high. This is a final-year car which may have a slight advantage over a '75-'79, but really it's still a less desirable rubber bumper car with all the emissions equipment choking the limited horsepower out of it. The low mileage is nice but not really a big deal here given the overall condition. It needs a good buffing and detailing.
To me it looks like a good car that with minor work can be worth the price. It's a good entry point for someone getting into old cars or British sports cars without getting heavily invested. Keep in mind that this car will probably never appreciate more than 10%. You will not make money on this car. If it runs well and there is no rust, it will make the new owner happy.
As a side note, the original factory hardtop fitted on this one is worth about $1000 on its own as long as the fiberglass, rear glass, and side plexi are in good shape. That's the key piece that can make this car worth the ask. Hopefully the soft top is good.
Glad they noted it's an inline 4. Thought it might have a Taunus V-4 for a moment..
