We first picked up on the scent of this fine example of 60's domestic engineering back in 2014 when it was offered for just shy of 15 large in Wisconsin -- but it is now halfway across the country and equally as tempting. Find this 1965 Chevrolet Corvair Corsa Turbo Coupe here on eBay with opening bid of $10,000 reserve-not-met located in Montgomery Village, MD with 5 days to go.The Corvair was more than just another pretty face in the world of classic cars of the mid sixties -- it was an engineering coup d'état, with a turbocharged aircooled engine shoved out back and independent suspension all around.
Mounted behind the rear axle is a 2.7 liter flat-6 that is boosted with a small non-intercooled turbocharger to produce 180 horsepower (SAE gross) according to the sticker on the air snorkus. This one is shifted with a 4-speed manual gearbox and is setup with some uuuuuge meats at all four corners.

Dang that is clean! look at that roof line and c pillar, beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI want to engage in physical intimacy with that car.
ReplyDeleteHere's my confessed weirdness; Look at that roof line and rear overhang again. Now, imagine taking the engine and transaxle and turning them 180-degrees to create a true mid-engined 2-seater. Look at how much rear overhang would be eliminated. (We'll deal possibly pushing the rear wheels/arches back a couple of inches and with the reverse rotation issue after the idea has sunk in.) Someone can certainly photo-shop that and post it as a comment.
ReplyDeleteNo, sorry. Proportions are perfect. Baby got back, as they say.
DeleteAnd makes it a lot easier to work on as-is.
