In the meantime, we'll play a game that is called...find the best $1000 car for sale that you can drive home. Yup, you gotta scour your local craigslist for something like this 1982 Poncho TransAm with a 5-speed and a 350, that just needs a battery charge and a spash of new fuel and it'd probably smoke all the way home.
Put your $1000 finds in the comments below.

1985 GMC bus - $1000

This is a former Phoenix city bus. It is perfect for an RV conversion because it has the kneel system and air ride suspension. It is powered by a Detroit supercharged turbo diesel 96. It is a beast and fires right up. Don't let the dirt scare you. All you need to get it home is the guts to drive something this big. Most of the seats have been removed and it is a 12/24 volt system with an inverter

ReplyDeleteThere is a lot of awful stuff in the sub 1k batch. My backup options were a beater with a heater Toyota truck for $650.. or a bunch of Saturnalia. Without a cluch, probably hard to drive a manual Accord circa 2002 home, but would be a contender otherwise.

ReplyDeleteMonte Carlo SS supercharged Dale Earnhardt edition. It’s gone 240k already surely it will make it home?
I found a bunch of sub $1K candidates that could be actual daily beaters with minor fixing as long as you don't mind salvage titles, worn seats, dents, and bad paint. Some decent stuff, really. But here are a few "indecent" oddballs that I found more entertaining.

2008 ZAP Trucklet
This may look bland, but it's a really rare one. It's not only a 264, which means it has a 6-cylinder instead of a 4, but it's a 1975, which means smog-exempt in California. This would be worth reviving. If the motor is junk, the chassis is a perfect candidate for a swap.
