This next car is just above the self imposed DT price limit of $20k, but the typical selling price for an Amphicar is somewhere above $45k if you put any faith in Bringatrailers auction data or active Hemmings.com listings. Prices are high for a car that can barely achieve freeway speeds, but number of Amphicars built by the Quandt Group for world wide distribution between 1961-68 was approximately 4500 and the number that get regular use is 500 (according to Amphicars.com). The Amphicar is a totally watertight floating car that is powered by a 1.2 liter inline-4 cylinder engine borrowed from the Triumph Herald 1200. The engine puts out 43 horsepower and can be connected to either the rear wheels or twin prop-shafts out the tail...and if want a cheap example this one looks to be ready to drive/float/whatever. Find this 1966 Amphicar Model 770 offered for $25000 in Los Angeles, CA via craigslist.

ReplyDeleteI'd always wanted to experience a ride in one. Got my chance last year when we visited Disney Springs in Orlando. There is a company there that has restored a bunch of real Amphicars, and you pay for a 20 minute ride around the lagoon.
