Dirt Yourself: 1960's Custom Dirt Super Modified

Checker or wreck 'er. Win it or bin it, so they say. Getting involved in vintage racing is a very appealing proposition for those who give zero effs. It's those with the Ferrari 250-somethings that have something to lose. So why not find some pedigree in the cheapest way possible and reliably take podium through fear and intimidation with this 1960's Custom Dirt Super Modified for sale in Shelby, NC for $2,500.

Super Modifieds peaked in popularity in the 50's and 60's in the Midwest and South where they would race nearly nightly to large crowds. The cars even evolved into having a large amount of downforce, which it appears that the builder experimented with here, judging by the tabs on the top of the roll bar. These cars ended up being the lower budget, dirt going versions of their Indianapolis brethren.

There is no engine to be found here. Likely once powered by a 312 Y-block or 331 Caddy that has succumbed to babbitt filled oil, the racer featured here awaits your creativity and donor car. EcoBoost four? A castaway Pontiac OHC straight six? Or maybe an LS and T-56 for practicality. The choices are bound only by your own imagination and value of human life. The car shockingly has rear disk brakes, perhaps pirated from an E-Type Jag and moved outboard.

The interior is special because it features a steering wheel yanked from a bumper car. It's also special because it has fossilized feces in the seat (which is definitely a barrel of pesticide) leftover from going three wide into turn one at Wake County Speedway in September 1964. Inset into the dash which has been toenailed to a cross bar, a lone gauge just left of the driver's hand shows a temperature or pressure of something, sometimes.
