    I dunno what it is, but it sure looks to me like the angle on that gas strut would not work very well. I look forward to hearing the answer, so I can figure out the geometry.

      Looks close, but the edge of the door and shape of the strut look wrong:

      Angle 1

      Angle 2

      I don't have a guess yet...

      Hmmmmm, your strut argument is persuasive -- I hadn't properly accounted for Girth in my calculations.

      That said, I think the photo is cropped to make it appear to be a split tailgate, but I since the v-dub tail notches in above the tail lights the cropping makes it appear we are looking at the whole tailgate. I think visual subterfuge is being employed!
